WordPress 3.x for Designers
This instructor-led class is for people who want to use WordPress. It's for web designers who'd like to get to know WordPress a little better -- or a lot better. It's for writers who have been asked to contribute content to a WordPress site, but haven't been shown how to use the software. It's for server administrators who'd like to know more about this little CMS that users are always asking them to install. It's for Drupal developers who suddenly need to write a WordPress plugin for a client this week. If you're familiar with PHP or MySQL, or if you've used another open source content management system in the past, great!
This class will take you from novice to professional. By the end, you'll know not only how to manage and customize your own site, but how to contribute your innovations back to the community by submitting plugins and themes to the central repository at wordpress.org. If you've never touched PHP before, that's OK. Understanding arrays, for example, might be necessary if you want to write your own plugin, but not if you want to install the software and configure your site with plugins and themes. And if you do want to learn more about code, WordPress is a great place to start.

XML - Introduction
This one-day course introduces the eXtensible Markup Language, or XML, including basic grammar and XML validation using DTDs or XML Schema. Students learn to read and to hand-write XML well-formed XML documents, and then proceed to modeling concepts, first learning the basic DTD language and then studying namespaces and XML Schema. The course closes with a chapter on important XML-related technology, including XPath, XSLT, SAX or DOM parsing, and SOAP-based Web services.
The module presents what might be called "Pure XML" -- by which we mean two things. Firstly, everything in the module is based strictly on W3C specifications, without any vendor-specific extensions. Secondly, no knowledge of any particular programming language or other external technology is required to participate fully in the module. Thus the hands-on exercises, and the knowledge that is developed, are portable and applicable to any XML authoring or development effort.
XML Training Learning Objectives
- Understand the broad influence of XML on emerging software architectures.
- Write well-formed XML documents to express simple or complex document content.
- Write DTDs to set rules for XML document validation.
- Write valid XML documents with internal and/or external document type definitions.
- Understand the limitations of DTDs in expressing document and object designs and in setting strict validation rules.
- Read and write XML using namespaces to import type information and to partition the XML namespace.
- Use XML Schema to validate XML documents.
- Understand the roles of XPath, XSLT, parsing, and Web services in the broader scope of XML technology in software applications.
XML for the Enterprise
This comprehensive course provides a full tour of the most prevalent XML standards, and introductory-to-intermediate training in each: XML itself, XML Schema, XSLT, and XSLFO. This is a great fit for students who are planning to work extensively with XML in the near future, as it gives a good grounding in how to manage XML information, define XML models (using XML Schema), transform XML information to text, HTML, or other XML formats (using XSLT), or to print-ready PDFs (using XSLFO).
XML Training Learning Objectives
- Understand the broad influence of XML on emerging software architectures.
- Understand the roles of XML Schema, XPath, XSLT, XSLFO, parsing APIs, and Web services in the broader scope of XML technology in software applications.
- Write well-formed XML documents to express simple or complex document content.
- Write DTDs to set rules for XML document validation.
- Read and write XML using namespaces to import type information and to partition the XML namespace.
- Use XML Schema to validate XML documents.
- Define simple types, and use value restrictions and enumerations to constrain values.
- Create complex types, including simple types and other complex types, and empty- and mixed-content types.
- Write simple and complex queries into XML document content using XPath.
- Transform XML data into plain text, HTML, or XML formats.
- Describe the relationship between XSLT and XSLFO, and their roles in the typical XML-to-print production process.
- Transform XML data into FO documents, and format those into PDFs.
XML Schema
This course gives the student who knows the fundamentals of XML a detailed introduction to the XML Schema standard for defining document type information.
The first module introduces the new XML Schema recommendation. Students review the shortcomings of the DTD for expressing type information, and learn how to use XML Schema to create strict document models. Schema data types and structures are studied, allowing precise grammar and validation rules to be defined for document content.
A second module offers intermediate-to-advanced instruction in effective use of the new XML Schema recommendation. Students build skills in use of keys and key references to associate elements based on key fields; cover complex-type extension; use of multiple namespaces and schema; and finally a chapter in best-practices in schema design.
XML Training Learning Objectives
- Develop XML Schema to express precise type information for an XML document.
- Associate schema with XML instance documents.
- Validate instance documents against associated schema.
- Define simple types, and use value restrictions and enumerations to constrain values.
- Define list types and union types.
- Create complex types, including simple types and other complex types, and empty- and mixed-content types.
- Define element and attribute groups for better reuse and more maintainable schema.
- Associate elements of different types using keys and key references.
- Create derived simple and complex types using restriction and/or extension.
- Develop hierarchies of reusable complex types using type extension.
- Populate multiple namespaces using schema, and import and use those namespaces in valid instance documents.
- Design schema that maximize validation capabilities and type reuse.
- Use XSLT as an additional stage of document validation, to catch patterns that XML Schema cannot be used to express.
XSLFO (eXtensible Stylesheet Language Formatting Objects)
This course introduces the eXtensible Stylesheet Language, or XSL -- also known as XSL with Formatting Objects or XSLFO, to distinguish it clearly from XSLT. XSLFO provides the ultimate, standards-based solution to producing print and other presentation documents from XML information. This course teaches XSL with a focus on producing PDFs, using Apache FOP as the formatting engine. Though XSL is quite a dense technology, this one-day course provides a solid grounding in the basic techniques, and students will leave the course ready to tackle simple to moderately complex formatting tasks.
XML Training Learning Objectives
- Describe the relationship between XSLT and XSLFO, and their roles in the typical XML-to-print production process.
- Understand the formatting objects model, including the concepts of page, area, block, and line.
- Build page masters and master sets to define common page layouts and area models.
- Build page sequences to produce body, header and footer content.
- Format content using blocks, inlines, lists and tables.
- Take explicit control of document pagination.
- Apply properties to formatting objects and use XSLFO's property-inheritance model effectively.
- Build tables of contents and embed hyperlinks into documents.
XSLT (eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations)
This comprehensive four-day course develops in-depth knowledge and skills in transforming XML documents using eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations, or XSLT. Students work through extensive hands-on exercises in transformations from XML to plain text, HTML, and XML, with good grounding in XPath along the way. Intermediate and advanced techniques are also covered including variables and parameters, callable templates, sorting and grouping, tail recursion, working with multiple documents, and XSLT extensions. The course teaches XPath and XSLT 1.0 but looks forward to the 2.0 releases of both specifications with pointers about what new features to expect.
XML Training Learning Objectives
